Road Journal 03.19.06

Birmingham, AL

We had a great show last night in Birmingham. We played to a packed house at Moonlight Music openening for Alabama songwriter Pierce Pettis. Many thanks go out to Kieth for taking such good care of us. The folks in Birmingham are real nice. After the show we hit up a dive called Marty's that had a great cover band called Bonus Round doing everything from Otis Redding to Kanye West.

We did South By Southwest in Austin this week and had the time of our lives. I got to see Tim Easton, Kris Kristofferson, and The Drive By Truckers at one show! The Truckers rocked the house and I was blown away by the guitar playing of Jason Isbell. SXSW is one big party where the drinks are flowing and the music is everywhere.

On a different note, we were almost car jacked in Jackson Mississippi. We had been driving for 12 hours when we pulled off on an exit to get a hotel in the wrong part of town. It was 1 in the morning when dude in a black sedan with no license plates tried the old "box 'em in" trick on a one lane off ramp after seeing our out of state plates. His partner in crime must have bailed on him because we weren't blocked from behind and when the man in the black sedan realized he couldn't pull it off, he peeled out and took off into the night.

Waco, TX

David Koresh and his Branch Davidian followers put Waco Texas on the map. I can't believe all of that happened 13 years ago. This is a quiet college town that I hear gets unbearably hot in the summer. It's hot and sticky today that's for sure and I can't imagine being here when it's a hundred degrees. We had a show here on Thursday night at Common Grounds that was a lot of fun and many thanks go out to Jill for putting the show together. We are heading down to Austin today to play a 10pm show at Ruta Maya for SXSW.

03.07.06 Houston, TX
Greetings from the second largest state in the country. Texas is hot, humid, and full of Texans. There is a bumper sticker down here that says: “I wasn’t born in Texas but I got here as soon as I could!”. All I can say is that I can’t wait to be around mountains again. Our show tonight at Clark’s is going to be off the charts. When we come to town speakers explode.

02.27.06 SEDONA, AZ
We just got back from seeing The Grand Canyon and it was overwhelming. 5 milllion years of erosion created one of the most amazing sights I've seen in my life. I must have taken one hundred pictures. We are staying at Meb Baier's place in Sedona and she, as always, is a total riot. Our show on Saturday at The Hotel Monte Vista was a lot of fun. We played three sets with a debut of new tunes in the third set. After the show we headed over to Jared Travis' place for some Jameson and some laughs. While in Sedona I am hoping to see a wild boar type desert animal called a "Javelina". The red dirt and rock here is so beautiful.

Being back in L.A. is a trip. So much has changed in Hollywood since I lived here, it's a lot nicer place now. The weather here can't be beat and Andrew and I are currently at a friends house named "Kethro" who you may have seen on Public Television if you live in San Diego. Tonights show at Room 5 sounds like it is going to be a good one so don't miss it!

02.13.06

We're chilling at Gena Gastaldi's house in Portland Oregon doing laundry and recharging our batteries. It has been way to long since I updated this road journal! We have played some great shows in the past week including ones in Wyoming, Utah, Oregon, and Washington. We had an amazing weekend in Seattle hanging with friends, performing, and just enjoying all the things that make Seattle such a great place to be. The weather was great the whole time we were there and I couldn't believe how many Alaskans are now living in Seattle. I love catching up with old friends. I saw R Kelly's "Trapped In The Closet" for the first time over at Sean Simmons' and nearly laughed myself to death when I heard R Kelly do the voice of the cheating wife Bridget. Now everything we say has to be sung just like R Kelly sings it in "Trapped In The Closet". Special thanks go out to Josh at the O Lounge for pouring a strong drink and making us feel right at home. Sean, it was a treat to hear a couple tracks off the new EXPLONE album at Litho. Great stuff.

02.02.06

We are chilling with Erik Braund at his place in Denver Colorado. Erik took us out to a delicious dinner at Cucina Calore and I had an awesome steak. Erik's apartment in downtown is beautiful. It has been nice to have the last two days off to hang with friends and recharge our batteries. Tomorrow we head to Wyoming for our show at Coal Creek Coffeehouse in Laramie.

01.31.06

Andrew and I are in Boulder, CO right now getting ready for our in store at Albums On The Hill. We perform tonight at The Fox Theatre and then we will go get crazy with Erik Braund. This is my first time in Boulder and I am impressed with how pretty it is here. We drove 9 hours to get here yesterday and saw a killer sunset and a lot of corn fields and cows. Goodbye Nebraska.

01.29.06

Great show at Micks last night. The sound system there is top notch and the folks are cool. We are at Christine and Sean's right now enjoying some tunes and laughing at everything. Tomorrow we head to Boulder CO to play the Fox Theatre. I get to see Erik Braund! The dude is a crack up.

01.27.06

We are sitting in a cafe in Ames Iowa. I just had the best Gyro ever with Brazilian fried potato's for $3.50. You got to love the prices in the midwest. We had a short drive yesterday and when we got to Ames we checked into the Super 8 for a nap. After a short nap we headed to the gig at the Bali House which is a college bar/pizza parlor/Indonesian Restaurant. At first it looked like things were going to go smoothly. We were guaranteed a couple dollars, dinner, and drinks. Of course the guy that we booked with was conveniently not there. The owner wanted to charge us after we finished our dinner and said he knew nothing of the guarantee and wanted to charge us for our drinks too. We were shocked that things were so backwards. After much negotiation and almost walking out on the gig he upheld what we were garmented. What a pain. We won over the crowd of college kids even though most of them were waiting around for the karaoke to start. The band up after us was a local band of kids that attend the college here called Jade Lea and they were really good. Three piece band with Keith on acoustic guitar/vocals, Crusten on drums, and Dale on bass. The guy ’s in the band were really nice. Next up was karaoke so I guess we opened for the band that opened for Karaoke. After I sang my best “Jessies Girl” by Rick Springfield, we got out of there. Many thanks go out to Josh on sound and Campbell behind the bar.

01.26.06

We are in Des Moines Iowa today enjoying a sunny day in downtown. Sunday we had a great show at Uncommon Ground in Chicago. We played to a packed house that had a bunch of Alaskans in the crowd. Niki and Gianna put us up at their pad and on Monday when we had the day off, Niki was our guide taking us all over the great city of Chicago. We hit the Art Institute briefly before they closed and then grabbed a deep dish pizza and drinks with Jesse, Max, and Emily. Nick’s Beer garden in Wicker Park was our next stop before our final destination Rock Bottom where Jesse and Max work. We had some strong beers and then headed out. We got on the wrong train and when we got off we ended up lost in the train stop/shopping mall. After finding our way out we grabbed a cab since we didn't think it was a good idea for three buzzed people to be wandering around a strange neighborhood in Chicago at 1 am.

Tuesday we played an intimate show at Brocach in Madison, WI. Brocach is a very cool Irish Pub with a great view of the Capitol Building at night. Thanks you to Kate and Kendall for taking such good care of us. We can’t wait to get back to Madison.

Last night we played at Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines with All But Screaming and Suffrajett. It was a slow Wednesday night in a big rock club and All But Screaming put on one hell of a show. Their tunes rock. Check them out at www.myspace.com/allbutscreaming

Next up was Andrew and I. Our set was as follows:
Pinky Swear, Something Else Instead, Coming Clean, Promise, Bright Ave, Ohio, Driving Into The Sun.

Andrew are in Kent Ohio right now. It 's snowing like crazy and we are hanging out at Gloria's Koffee and Kakes. Last night we played a great rock club called The Lime Spider in Akron and tonight we play Rascal's Saloon in Dover. Apparently today is "Wild Women Wednesday" at Rascal's so I think the show should be interesting. We had a GREAT show in DC on Sunday at IOTA with Rose Polenzani (w/ Austin Nevins on lead guitar) and Kristin Hoffmann. It was a treat to see them in that venue (see below for their web sites). The sound was amazing and Andrew and I agreed it was one of the best shows either of us had ever played. Rose invited us up to Boston to play a show with her and Austin so we will be adding a Boston date to the tour!
